چکیده

In this paper we introduce by means of examples a new technique for formulating compact (i.e. polynomial-size) LP relaxations in place of exponential-size models requiring separation algorithms. In the same vein as a celebrated theorem by Grotschel, Lovasz and Schrijver, we state the equivalence of compact separation and compact optimization. Among the examples used to illustrate our technique, we introduce a new formulation for the Traveling Salesman Problem, whose relaxation we show equivalent to the subtour elimination relaxation. Semidefinite Programming vs. LP Relaxations for Polynomial Programming

We consider the global minimization of a multivariate polynomial on a semi-algebraic set defined with polynomial inequalities. We then compare two hierarchies of relaxations, namely, LP relaxations based on products of the original constraints, in the spirit of the RLT procedure of Sherali and Adams (1990), and recent semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations introduced by the author. The comp...

Small Extended Formulation for Knapsack Cover Inequalities from Monotone Circuits

Initially developed for the min-knapsack problem, the knapsack cover inequalities are used in the current best relaxations for numerous combinatorial optimization problems of covering type. In spite of their widespread use, these inequalities yield linear programming (LP) relaxations of exponential size, over which it is not known how to optimize exactly in polynomial time. In this paper we add...

SDP vs. LP relaxations for the moment approach in some performance evaluation problems

Given a Markov process we are interested in the numerical computation of the moments of the exit time from a bounded domain. We use a moment approach which, together with appropriate semidefinite positivity moment conditions, yields a sequence of semidefinite programs (or SDP relaxations), depending on the number of moments considered, that provide a sequence of nonincreasing (resp. nondecreasi...

Compact Relaxations for MAP Inference in Pairwise MRFs with Piecewise Linear Priors

Label assignment problems with large state spaces are important tasks especially in computer vision. Often the pairwise interaction (or smoothness prior) between labels assigned at adjacent nodes (or pixels) can be described as a function of the label difference. Exact inference in such labeling tasks is still difficult, and therefore approximate inference methods based on a linear programming ...

Characterizing Tightness of LP Relaxations by Forbidding Signed Minors

We consider binary pairwise graphical models and provide an exact characterization (necessary and sufficient conditions observing signs of potentials) of tightness for the LP relaxation on the triplet-consistent polytope of the MAP inference problem, by forbidding an odd-K5 (complete graph on 5 variables with all edges repulsive) as a signed minor in the signed suspension graph. This captures s...
